Herniated Discs

A herniated disc can press on spinal nerves and cause neck, back, arm or leg pain. Learn about image-guided treatment options.

What Is Herniated Discs?

The discs between the bones of the spine act as cushions. A herniated disc happens when the soft inner material pushes through a tear in the outer layer and presses on or irritates a nearby nerve. It is most common in the low back and neck.

Common Symptoms

  • Neck or low back pain
  • Pain, numbness or tingling that travels into an arm or leg
  • Muscle weakness in the arm or leg
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, bending or coughing

How Dr. Rema Can Help

Many disc herniations improve with time, activity changes and physical therapy. When pain persists, Dr. Rema may recommend an image-guided epidural steroid injection or a selective nerve root block to calm the inflamed nerve. For long-standing nerve pain, spinal cord stimulation may be discussed.
