Botox Injection

Small injections of botulinum toxin that can help prevent chronic migraine and ease certain muscle-related pain.

What Is Botox Injection?

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a medicine that relaxes muscles and can block certain pain signals. It is FDA approved to help prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine, meaning 15 or more headache days per month. It is also used for certain muscle spasm conditions.

Conditions It May Help

  • Chronic migraine
  • Cervical dystonia (painful neck muscle spasm)
  • Certain muscle spasticity conditions

How It Is Done

Botox is given as a series of small injections with a very fine needle into specific muscles. For chronic migraine this usually includes areas of the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck and shoulders. A visit usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and treatments are typically repeated about every 12 weeks.

What to Expect

You can usually return to normal activities right away. It may take a few weeks to notice benefit, and more than one treatment cycle may be needed to judge how well it works for you.

Possible Side Effects and Risks

Injection site soreness, neck pain or stiffness, headache, and temporary muscle weakness. Uncommonly, a drooping eyelid or brow can occur. Rare but serious side effects include trouble swallowing or breathing, which need prompt medical attention. Dr. Rema will review your medical history and medications, including blood thinners, before your procedure.
