Bursa Injection
A targeted injection that calms inflammation in a bursa, the small cushioning sac near a joint.
What Is Bursa Injection?
A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions tendons and muscles near a joint. When it becomes inflamed (bursitis), it can cause pain with movement or pressure. A bursa injection places a corticosteroid, usually with numbing medicine, into the bursa to reduce inflammation.
Conditions It May Help
- Hip bursitis (greater trochanteric pain), often felt on the outside of the hip
- Shoulder (subacromial) bursitis
- Knee or elbow bursitis
- Pain when lying on the affected side
How It Is Done
The skin is cleaned and numbed. Dr. Rema may use ultrasound to guide the needle precisely into the bursa. The injection usually takes just a few minutes.
What to Expect
You may feel relief from the numbing medicine right away, with steroid benefit developing over several days. Take it easy for a day or two, then resume activity. Stretching and strengthening exercises can help prevent recurrence.
Possible Side Effects and Risks
Temporary soreness or a short-term flare of pain, and skin lightening or thinning at the site. Uncommon risks include infection and tendon irritation. Dr. Rema will review your medical history and medications, including blood thinners, before your procedure.
