Hypogastric Block

An injection near a group of nerves in front of the lower spine that can help certain types of chronic pelvic pain.

What Is Hypogastric Block?

The superior hypogastric plexus is a network of nerves in front of the lower spine that carries pain signals from many pelvic organs. A hypogastric block places numbing medicine, sometimes with a steroid, near these nerves to reduce pelvic pain.

Conditions It May Help

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Pain related to endometriosis
  • Some bladder, bowel or reproductive organ pain
  • Pelvic pain related to cancer

How It Is Done

You lie face down and the skin is cleaned and numbed. Light sedation may be offered. With fluoroscopy and contrast dye, Dr. Rema guides a thin needle to the front of the lower spine. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes.

What to Expect

You will rest briefly after the procedure and should have a driver. Soreness in the low back is common for a day or two. Your pain response will help Dr. Rema decide on next steps, which may include repeat blocks.

Possible Side Effects and Risks

Soreness, bruising and temporary numbness. Uncommon risks include infection, bleeding, and injury to nearby blood vessels or structures. Dr. Rema will review your medical history and medications, including blood thinners, before your procedure.
