Pudendal Nerve Block
A targeted injection that can help diagnose and relieve pain from the pudendal nerve in the pelvic floor area.
What Is Pudendal Nerve Block?
The pudendal nerve supplies feeling to the genital, perineal and rectal areas. When it is irritated, it can cause burning or aching pain that is often worse when sitting. A pudendal nerve block places numbing medicine, often with a steroid, around the nerve to help confirm the diagnosis and ease pain.
Conditions It May Help
- Pudendal neuralgia
- Chronic pelvic or perineal pain
- Pain in the genital or rectal area that worsens with sitting
How It Is Done
You lie face down, and the skin is cleaned and numbed. Using fluoroscopy or ultrasound, Dr. Rema guides a thin needle through the buttock to the nerve. The procedure typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
What to Expect
You may feel temporary numbness in the pelvic area for a few hours. Please arrange a driver. Tracking how your pain changes helps guide treatment, and a series of blocks may be recommended.
Possible Side Effects and Risks
Soreness at the injection site, temporary numbness, and temporary leg weakness. Uncommon risks include infection, bleeding and nerve injury. Dr. Rema will review your medical history and medications, including blood thinners, before your procedure.
