Radiofrequency Ablation
Uses gentle heat on small pain-carrying nerves to provide longer-lasting relief from facet joint neck or back pain.
What Is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), also called radiofrequency neurotomy, uses heat created by radio waves to disrupt the small nerves that carry pain signals from the facet joints of the spine. It is usually offered after medial branch blocks have shown that these joints are a source of your pain. Relief can last many months, and because nerves can regrow, the procedure can be repeated if needed.
Conditions It May Help
- Facet joint arthritis of the neck or low back
- Chronic axial neck or back pain
- Pain confirmed by successful diagnostic medial branch blocks
How It Is Done
The skin is numbed, and you may receive light sedation. Using fluoroscopy, Dr. Rema places special needles next to the target nerves, tests their position with mild electrical stimulation, and then heats the nerve tissue. Depending on how many levels are treated, it typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
What to Expect
You will go home the same day and should have a driver. Soreness, or a sunburn-like feeling over the area, is common for one to two weeks. It can take a few weeks to feel the full effect.
Possible Side Effects and Risks
Temporary pain or numbness at the treatment site. Uncommon risks include infection, bleeding and nerve injury. Dr. Rema will review your medications and medical history beforehand. Dr. Rema will review your medical history and medications, including blood thinners, before your procedure.
