Trigger Point Injection

Quick in-office injections that help relax painful muscle knots in the neck, shoulders, back or other areas.

What Is Trigger Point Injection?

Trigger points are tight, tender knots in a muscle that can cause local pain or pain that spreads to other areas, such as a headache from tight neck muscles. A trigger point injection places a small amount of numbing medicine, sometimes with a steroid, into the knot to help the muscle relax.

Conditions It May Help

  • Myofascial pain
  • Neck and shoulder muscle tension
  • Tension-type headaches related to muscle tightness
  • Low back muscle pain
  • Fibromyalgia-related tender points in some cases

How It Is Done

Dr. Rema locates the trigger points by touch, cleans the skin and uses a thin needle to inject each point. Several points can be treated in one visit, which usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

What to Expect

You can typically go back to normal activities right away. The area may be sore for a day or two. Gentle stretching, heat, and physical therapy can help extend the benefit.

Possible Side Effects and Risks

Soreness, bruising, or temporary numbness at the site. Uncommon risks include infection, bleeding and, when treating the chest or upper back, a collapsed lung (pneumothorax), which is rare. Dr. Rema will review your medical history and medications, including blood thinners, before your procedure.
